Select a ″classical music″ composer, or a ″popular music″ composer who was influenced by ″classical music,″ listed in the text about whom to write a 5-6 page research paper. You must get my approval for the composer that you pick so that I can be sure of the quality of your choice. It does not matter if more than one person selects the same composer, but you must write your paper independently, not as a team.
Conduct research online or in the library, from 2 or more sources, about your composer.
Write a brief biography of the composer.
List the composer’s musical output (what different kinds of pieces he or she wrote, and how many of each category of piece – for example: 15 symphonies, 2 operas, 3 concertos, 20 sonatas for piano, etc.).
Discuss your impression of the composer’s influence on the culture of Europe and the Americas. Was his or her influence small, medium, or large, in your opinion? Support your opinion with facts you found in your research about the composer. For instance, Stravinsky′s ballet, ″The Rite of Spring,″ changed the course of music so drastically that it caused a riot in Paris after its premiere. Additionally, a section of ″The Rite of Spring″ was part of the Disney animated classic, ″Fantasia.″ Or as another example, the famous jazz band leader and composer, Duke Ellington, wrote long, symphonic-style jazz pieces and an opera.
In your discussion of the composer′s influence on culture, be sure to include the following points: (1) the relationship between the composer, and the time and place in which he or she composed music, i.e., religious, political, artistic, and social movements of the time; (2) the musical style(s), forms, and genres in which the composer composed his or her music.
Discuss your emotional response to the composer′s music and the emotional response that listeners had to the composer′s music during the composer′s lifetime.
List your sources using either APA or Chicago Style Manual format.
Pages should be formatted with 1 inch margins, use double spacing, and use minimal spacing between words and between sentences. Such pages, in 12-point Times New Roman font, would contain approximately 250 words per page. Therefore, your paper should contain 1,250-1,500 words, not including listing the sources you researched for your paper.
